Community reminder: Fireworks illegal in Thornton, $500 fine awaits violators

Fireworks
Fireworks are illegal in Thornton and with the tinder dry conditions this year, fire danger is extraordinarily high. Please leave the show to the pros!

Fireworks have long been illegal in the City of Thornton and in recent years stiff fines have been meted out to violators.  This year with conditions tinder dry it is especially important that residents adhere to the law and leave the show to the pros.

Wildfires are burning across Colorado right now with tens of thousands of acres charred, 500 homes destroyed and lives lost.  These events highlight that even a small spark in the dry conditions we are experiencing could lead to disaster.  The danger is there, even in an urban environment, where foliage is very dry, lawns are parched and building materials are completely dried out.

Gov. John Hickenlooper issued a statewide ban on open burning and this includes fireworks.  While residents could still go to Wyoming or unincorporated areas of Adams County to purchase them, the risk is simply not worth the minimal reward.

Not too many of us have an extra $500 lying around and that is what it will cost anyone who shoots off fireworks in Thornton.  A second violation in 12 months nets you a $1,000 fine.  Of course violators will also have to deal with the disdain of neighbors who likely do not appreciate the noise, mess, smoke, hassle and danger you present to their property.

The City of Thornton will be holding its annual 4th of July celebration with its usual second-to-none fireworks show.  ThorntonWeather.com asks all Thornton residents, please, don’t put anyone at risk.

Rather than spend money on fireworks – and fines – do something good with your money.  The City of Thornton will be accepting donations to the newly established  Colorado Fire Relief Fund 2012.  Show your support for our fellow Coloradoans affected by these disasters and leave the show to the pros.

ThorntonWeather.com News to participate in Internet ‘blackout’ on January 18

Protect the Internet from censorship - Contact Senators and Congressman and urge them to vote against SOPA / PIPA!
Dueling bills backed by President Barack Obama, Senator Harry Reid and others would lead to Internet censorship at the whim of the entertainment industry, the government and judges.  To protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), ThorntonWeather.com’s news section will join thousands of other websites and ‘go dark’ on January 18.

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is sponsoring PIPA in the Senate and Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX) is carrying SOPA in the House of Representatives.  The bills are backed by Hollywood and big media ostensibly as a way to stop online piracy and protect copyrights.  They are however bad ideas that could lead to the censorship of websites like ThorntonWeather.com.

These ineffective and shortsighted bills would place undue burdens on websites and Internet providers.  Any company with an intellectual copyright claim could for example force Google to remove links to an accused site, prevent credit card companies from processing payments to the accused site, and much more.  This could all be done without any legal proceedings at all.

ThorntonWeather.com takes great care to respect and honor other’s property in written, audio or visual form and we are proud of our efforts to never take liberty with someone else’s hard work.  However, under SOPA / PIPA, our site could be brought down simply if someone posted a comment that contained copyrighted text or linked to a site that hosted copyrighted material.

This simply is unacceptable.  ThorntonWeather.com will be joining other sites like Wikipedia, Tucows, and Reddit in the blackout to take place tomorrow.

Please watch the video below for more information and contact your Senators and Congressman and urge them to vote against SOPA / PIPA.  You can also learn more about the dangers of SOPA / PIPA via this infographic and at the links below the video.

Fall back: Daylight Savings Time comes to an end

The United States returned to Standard Time at 2:00am Sunday. Did you remember to set your clocks back?

Did you remember to set your clocks back last night?  Daylight Savings Time came to an end at 2:00am Sunday morning.

The ritual of changing our clocks twice a year can be met with some resistance as some people struggle to adjust their body’s internal clock.  Others actually like the return to standard time as they get to enjoy an extra hour of sleep.

The time change definitely has big effects on how early it gets dark in the evening.  On Saturday, sunset was at 5:54pm but on Sunday the sun will disappear over the horizon at 4:53pm.  For many this means that when they get home from work it will now be dark and outdoor activities will be significantly curtailed as a result.

It won’t be all that long though before Daylight Savings Time returns.  On March 11, 2012 we will ‘spring forward.’

Some of the recent history of Daylight Savings Time (from Wikipedia):

Daylight saving time in the United States was first observed in 1918. Most areas of the United States currently observe daylight saving time, with the exceptions being the states of Arizona and Hawaii along with the territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

From 1987 to 2006, daylight saving time in the United States began on the first Sunday of April and ended on the last Sunday of October. The time was adjusted at 2:00 AM (0200) local time (as it still is done now).

Since 2007, daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November, with all time changes taking place at 2:00 AM (0200) local time. In 2011, daylight saving time began on March 13 and will end on November 6.

Local sculptor donates extraordinary statue to Thornton Veterans Memorial

"Grace" will become a prominent feature of the Thornton Veterans Memorial. We here at ThorntonWeather.com are tremendous supporters of our nation’s veterans and have contributed our time and our financial resources to various veteran-related causes.

As President Abraham Lincoln said, “Any nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.”  To that end we are strong supporters of the Thornton Veterans Memorial and we were very pleased to hear about a contribution to the project made by a local sculptor, Christopher Romero

What follows is the press release announcing the donation.  Mr. Romero should be commended for honoring our nation’s veterans in such a truly extraordinary fashion.

Local Artisan Contributes Statue Dedicated to Veterans
“Grace” to Become Prominent Feature at Thornton Veterans Memorial

THORNTON, Colorado – Sculptor Christopher Romero, well known for his works seen across the Denver metro area, announced he will donate his latest work as a contribution to the Thornton Veterans Memorial project.

Titled “Grace”, the nearly four-foot tall statue of a winged angel releasing a dove with dog tags is an extraordinarily moving piece of artwork.  Grace’s outstretched arms symbolize the release of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to this nation.  The dog tags carried aloft by a dove provide a visual and emotional representation of those brave men and women.

In announcing the contribution Mr. Romero said, “This is simply about doing what is right to honor our nation’s veterans.  Grace belongs at this memorial and I am pleased that she will have a home honoring heroes.”

Romero’s contribution of the sculpture is valued at $12,000 and the Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation will be funding the casting and molding estimated at $4,500.

The initial stages of work on “Grace” have been completed and the sculpture is now at the foundry where it will be rendered in bronze, a process estimated to take 90 days.  Once complete the statue will be placed with the other features of the Thornton Veterans Memorial located near 136th Avenue and Holly Street.

“Grace will be a central feature of the Thornton Veterans Memorial and adds a human element that quite literally brings tears to your eyes,” Tony Hake, chairman of the foundation said.  “On behalf of all veterans we thank Mr. Romero for the generosity he has shown in sharing Grace with the community.”

Please join us as we remember those who died on September 11, 2001.
Please join us as we remember those who died on September 11, 2001.

September 11, 2001 is a date which is forever etched in the memories of all Americans. The events of that horrible day serve as a reminder of the vigilance that we must maintain to defend our nation and the sacrifices that have been made to keep us safe.

In the wake of the attacks, each year the President of the United States designates September 11th as Patriot Day – a day of remembrance to ensure we never forget the men and women who died on that fateful today.

This year we invite everyone to please join us on the 9th anniversary of the attacks at the City of Thornton’s September 11th Remembrance Ceremony.

This event, a joint effort with the City of Thornton, The Thornton Police and Fire Departments, the Thornton Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation, provides us an opportunity as a community to come together and honor the fallen.

The weather should be perfect so please join us at 9:30am on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Thornton Community Park (2141 E. 95th Ave) for this special event.  The event will be held on the field at the east-most stage.

The Thornton Veterans Memorial is ready to start construction on the first phase! Be sure to contribute to the effort!

A dedicated group of volunteers at the Thornton Veterans memorial Foundation announced that they will be starting construction on the first phase of the city’s veterans memorial.  This is an exciting milestone for all veterans – past, present and future – who deserve a memorial in their honor.

The first phase of construction will include the center pentagon, educational signage and flag poles.  Further, all paver bricks that have been purchased will be engraved and laid in the memorial and its walkways at this time.

If you haven’t placed your order for a paver brick engraved with the name of a veteran you wish to honor or some other appropriate message, NOW IS THE TIME.  Orders for engraved paver bricks to be included in this initial phase of construction MUST be received by the Thornton Veterans Memorial by no later than Tuesday, June 29th.

Please visit the foundation’s online store TODAY and place your order!  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to honor our nation’s veterans!

Tony Hake, owner and operator of ThorntonWeather.com, has personally donated over $2,000 to the memorial and encourages all area residents, civic organizations and businesses to contribute.  ThorntonWeather.com is entirely free for everyone and Hake has asked that donations to the veterans memorial be made instead of paying for the information on this site.

Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to the memorial to help us ensure the men and women who have sacrificed for us have a place of honor.  Visit the Thornton Veterans Memorial website’s main page and click on the Uncle Sam image to give to the memorial today!

Thornton gets last chance to see the International Space Station and Space Shuttle Atlantis

The Space Shuttle Atlantis rocketed from Kennedy Space Center yesterday on its way to its final rendezvous with the International Space Station. This will be Atlantis’ final flight as NASA prepares to retire the Space Shuttle fleet and it affords Earth-bound viewers their final chances to see the pair from the ground.

Good sighting opportunities to view the ISS and Atlantis will be available across much of the continental United States this weekend and they will occur at times in the late evening that will make it easy for everyone. The weekend and the first part of next week all hold chances for many areas if the skies are clear.

Here in Thornton, on Saturday night the two spacecraft will be at their highest elevation. However, we will unfortunately have a good deal of cloud cover at the appointed time making it difficult. If you can catch a glimpse tonight though, it will be interesting because the pair will not have docked yet and you will be able to see both flying separately overhead.

We have a better chance to see the ISS and Atlantis on Sunday. While they won’t be as high above the horizon, the skies should be a clearer. By then they will have docked and so you will see one bright unit as it moves across the nighttime sky.

To find out when to turn your gaze skyward and where to look, check out our ISS / Space Station viewing page.  For viewing opportunities in other places in the nation, visit this page on NASA’s website.

To see what the cloud cover will be at the viewing times, check out our Thornton point forecast graphics.

City of Thornton raises severe weather awareness with new brochure

Severe weather season is quickly going to arrive in Colorado – we have already seen signs of it in recent weeks.  Helping to bring attention to the dangers severe weather presents, the City of Thornton has created a new flyer with some tips for residents.

Available on the city’s website, the flyer covers the basics of tornado, thunderstorm and lightning safety.  It is a good, brief look at the highlights of keeping you and your family safe when severe weather strikes.

Click here to download and view the brochure (PDF)

For more in depth information on severe weather and safety, check out the links at the bottom of this story for our Severe Weather 101 series.

It is important to note that neither the City of Thornton or Adams County provide any sort of weather / civil alert system for residents.  Certainly for Thornton this is somewhat ironic considering the city is where the worst tornado to ever strike the metro area occurred

We discussed the issue with Thornton officials last year and will be approaching them again in the coming weeks to see if anything has changed since then.  Certainly after last year’s nasty summer weather, residents are on edge.

In the meantime, we cannot stress enough that city residents should have their own NOAA Weather Radio in their homes and businesses.  For more information about these crucial pieces of safety equipment, click here.
