Record high temperature set for September 21

Record High TemperaturesIn our morning forecast we said it was possible we would break the record high temperature and indeed we did. In fact, we smashed it.

At 3:05pm the mercury at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City’s official records are kept topped out at 92 degrees.  This easily bested the previous record high for this date of 89 degrees set in 2015.

Here in Thornton we were just a touch cooler with our high hitting 91 degrees at 3:19pm.

Change is coming soon though with high temperatures this weekend being much cooler.  A trough and associated cold front will be moving through and that will translate to Saturday highs in the mid to upper 60s and only the upper 50s on Sunday.

Denver sets a new record high temperature for September 3

Record High TemperaturesWhew! Is this September or July?  As expected the mercury kept on climbing today and did indeed get into record-setting territory.

At 1:53pm the temperature at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City’s official records are kept reached 97 degrees.  This easily bests the previous record high for the date of 95 degrees set in 1995.

Additionally the reading tied the record for hottest September temperature.  Six other times in the past the mercury reached 97 degrees during September occurring on September 1, 1995, September 4, 1960, September 4, 1995, September 5, 1899, September 5, 2013, and September 6, 2013.

Here in Thornton, we were actually warmer than DIA (a rarity).  Temperatures here topped out at 98.5 degrees at 1:20pm.

While above normal temperatures (but not record-setting) are expected for tomorrow, we do expect to see a significant cool down Tuesday then see things bounce back to readings a bit above normal for the balance of the week. See the extended forecast here.

Record High TemperaturesWe knew it would be hot today and the proof is in the numbers as Denver set a new record high temperature for the date.

According to the National Weather Service, the mercury topped out at 99 degrees at Denver International Airport.  This breaks the previous record high for June 20 of 97 degrees set in 2007.

Here in Thornton, we almost matched the record with a high of 97.9 degrees at 3:57pm.

There will be no break from the heat until Friday.

Tomorrow’s forecast high of 98 degrees mirrors today’s high and will again come close to the record for June 21 (99 degrees in 2007). Thursday does cool some but with a forecast high of 91 degrees, the reading will still be well above normal for the date (85 degrees).

Denver sets record high temperature for March 23

Record High TemperaturesWith wintry weather just hours away, Denver’s recent warm spell let out one last gasp with a record high temperature.

At 3:03pm the high temperature at Denver International Airport, where the Mile High City’s official measurements are taken, reached 77 degrees.  This broke the record high for the date set in 2012 and previous years.

Here in Thornton we were just a touch cooler topping out at 76.1 degrees at 1:51pm.

While the month of March has continued the unseasonably warm weather that began in February, this is the first record high set this month.  The weather picture changes considerably, at least in the short term, with a blast of cold and snow set to arrive tonight.

Another record falls: Denver sets fourth high temperature record for the month

Record High TemperaturesFive days after the last one and for the fourth time this month, Denver set a daily high temperature record today.

Per the National Weather Service, the high temperature at Denver International Airport topped out at 73 degrees today.  This tops the previous record high temperature for today’s day of 71 degrees last set in 1995.

Here in Thornton, we were actually a bit warmer with a high of 74 degrees.

This follows on three previous daily record high temperatures this month:

  • February 10: 80 degrees (old 71 degrees in 1951)
  • February 15: 67 degrees (old 66 degrees in 1986)
  • February 16: 75 degrees (old 70 degrees in 1970)

The 80 degree reading on February 10 was also the warmest mercury reading on history in Denver.  The old warmest February reading of 77 degrees was recorded on February 4, 1890 and February 28, 2006.

We look to be done with the record-setting temperatures for the foreseeable future however.  Following another mild day tomorrow, we will turn colder for the balance of the week as a trough digs in pulling colder air in from the north. Check out our extended forecast for details.

Denver sets record high temperature for February 16, third high temp record of the month

Record High TemperaturesFor the second day in a row and the third time during February 2016, the Mile High City set a daily high temperature record.

At 2:59pm Denver International Airport topped out at 75 degrees.  This easily bested the previous record high temperature for February 16 of 70 degrees set in 1970.  Here in Thornton we matched Denver’s high with 74.7 degrees coming at 2:35pm.

Yesterday Denver’s high temperature reading of 67 degrees broke the high temperature for that date (previously 66 degrees in 1986).  On February 10th, Denver reached 80 degrees making it not only the warmest reading for that date but also the warmest February temperature ever recorded.

Denver sets record high temperature for February 15

Record High TemperaturesThe Mile High City set our second daily record high temperature thus far this month today.  Even warmer temperatures are expected tomorrow that will as well set a record.

Today the temperature in Denver, as officially measured at DIA, topped out at 67 degrees at 3:16pm.  This bests the old record high temperature for February 15 of 66 degrees set in 1986.

Here in Thornton we were just a bit cooler with a high of 65.2 degrees.

Tomorrow promises to be yet another record-setter.  The high temperature record for February 16 is 70 degrees set in 1970.  Highs are expected to push into the low to mid-70s.

Denver sets record for warmest temperature reading ever in February

Record High TemperaturesWe knew it was going to be warm and windy today and boy was it! Downslope winds kept things warm in the early morning hours and it went up a good ways from there.

At 1:38pm the temperature at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City’s official measurements are taken reached 80 degrees.

This easily bested the record high temperature for this date (71 degrees in 1951).  More notably that also is the warmest temperature reading ever in February in Denver.  The old warmest February reading of 77 degrees was recorded on February 4, 1890 and February 28, 2006.

Here in Thornton, we were a touch warmer than Denver with a high of 80.5 degrees at 1:22pm.

As for the wind, it kicked into high gear at around 2:00am.  Our top gust of 48.3 mph occurred at 8:15am.

Denver sets record low temperature for December 17

Record Cold TemperaturesWe knew it was going to be cold today in the wake of our overnight snow and sure enough, the numbers bear that out.

Denver recorded a low temperature of 15 degrees below zero at 7:14pm.  This easily bests the record low for December 17 of 13 degrees below zero set in 1909.

Here in Thornton, we managed to stay warmer, although with these extremes, that isn’t saying much. Thornton hit a low of 10.7 degrees below zero at 5:57pm.

The storm system brought 5.8 inches of snow to Thornton, our biggest snowfall of the season. Out at DIA where Denver’s official measurements are kept, 8.0 inches fell.

Denver ties all-time record high temperature for month of November

Record High TemperaturesWe thought the daily high temperature record for November 16 would fall today and indeed it did.  However the Mile High City also managed to tie the record for the warmest temperature ever recorded during the month of November.

At 1:24pm the station at Denver International Airport reported a mercury reading of 80 degrees.

This easily bested the previous record high temperature for November 16 of 77 degrees set in 1941.

Perhaps more notably, the reading also ties the all-time record high temperature for the month of November.  The old mark was 80 degrees set on November 8, 2006.  This is in turn the latest in the year an 80 degree reading has been tallied.

Here in Thornton, we were a bit warmer than DIA.  Our temperature topped out at 81.5 degrees at 1:02pm.

Showcasing the wide swings of weather we experience here in Colorado is the fact that after these records today, high temperatures tomorrow won’t go very far into the 40s.  Check out forecast for the latest.
