Denver sets record low maximum temperature for February 20

Record Cold TemperaturesIn the wake of yesterday’s snow the Mile High City experienced lingering cold today.  The so-called “high” temperature in fact was a record-setter.

The high temperature for Denver today, as measured at Denver International Airport, came in at 13 degrees.  That is the coldest high temperature ever recorded on February 20, breaking the old record low maximum of 16 degrees set in 1911.

Here in Thornton, we matched the Mile High City’s high with a 13 degree reading at 3:08pm.

It may be a while before we see any truly warm temperatures.  Short range forecasts indicate it could be Monday or Tuesday before mercury readings return to normal. Additionally, long range forecasts currently point to overall colder than normal temps in the 8 to 14 day period.

Denver ties record high temperature for January 18

Record High TemperaturesWe knew today was going to be unseasonably warm and the numbers backed that up.

The National Weather Service reports that Denver’s high temperature today, as measured at Denver International Airport, topped out at 65 degrees. That matches the record high temperature for the date last set in 1920.

Here in Thornton, we were a bit cooler with a high of 62.8 degrees.

With high temperatures tomorrow expected to reach similar heights, we may set another record Friday. The record high for January 19 is 68 degrees last set in 1986.

Denver ties the record high temperature for December 12

Record High TemperaturesOur very mild weather today led to another high temperature record, something we have seen a few time over the past month or so.

At 1:58pm, the high temperature in Denver reached 69 degrees as measured at Denver International Airport. This tied the record high for the date set in 1895.  The average high for the date is 43 degrees.

Today’s event is the fourth record high that has been set or tied in the last eight weeks (October 25, November 26, November 27).  The record high on November 27 of 81 degrees was also the warmest November reading ever recorded in Denver.

Here in Thornton we matched the Mile High City’s temperature with a reading of 69 degrees as well coming at 2:16pm.

Denver sets record high for November 27, highest temp ever recorded in November

Record High TemperaturesA double shot of high temperature records for the Mile High City today.

As measured at Denver International Airport, Denver saw a high today of 81 degrees at 12:56pm.  This easily bested the record high temperature for November 27 of 74 degrees set in 1950 and 1903.

Additionally, the 81 degree reading is the warmest reading ever seen in the month of November. The old record was 80 degrees on the 8th of 2006 & the 16th of 2016.

Of course the key to all of the above is the “as measured at Denver International Airport.”  Since moving Denver’s official weather station to the airport far east of its historical locations, we have seen similar occurrences of temperature extremes that don’t mate up with stations close to the city.

Today for example, the station at the Denver City Park recorded a high of 78 degrees.  Still a record but a far cry from what the airport reported.  As a result, these new records really should come with an asterisk.

Here in Thornton, we saw a high of 77.5 degrees at 1:24pm.

Pretty big changes are on the way tonight when a cold front arrives. That will send temperatures down and bring us a chance for snow overnight. Details in the extended forecast here.

Denver sets record high temperature for November 26

Record High TemperaturesThe unusually warm temperatures we have seen this month definitely make it hard to believe we are now at the end of November. Today continued the trend as the mercury climbed into record-setting territory.

At 2:16pm the temperature topped out at 74 degrees at Denver’s official station at Denver International Airport.  These easily bested the record high temperature for the date of 72 degrees set in 1998.

Here in Thornton we were just a touch warmer with a high of 74.5 degrees.

The temperatures today continue the trend of a very warm, dry November.  Currently, the overall average temperature for the month is running nearly five degrees above normal.

Tomorrow looks to bring another unseasonably warm and possibly record setting day. See the extended forecast here.

Denver sets high temperature record for October 25

Record High TemperaturesWe figured we would tie or just break the high temperature record today and in fact we pretty much crushed it.  If you liked the warmth, don’t get too excited though as a big change is on the way.

The Mile High City’s official high temperature, as measured at Denver International Airport, topped out at 84 degrees today at 3:52pm.  This easily bested the previous record for the date of 80 degrees set in 2014, 2007 and 1959.  Average for today’s date is 62 degrees.

Here in Thornton, we were just a bit warmer with a high of 85 degrees coming at 3:07pm.

That warmth though will soon be nothing but a memory as much colder weather is on the way tomorrow.  The high temp tomorrow will likely come at midnight and from there it will downhill.  By tomorrow evening the mercury readings will be at or even below 40 degrees.

Snow, unfortunately, will not amount to much from this system.  Current indications point to maybe some rain by late morning tomorrow followed by some snow in the afternoon and evening. Accumulations will likely be less than half an inch.

Details in our extended forecast here.

Record high temperature set for September 21

Record High TemperaturesIn our morning forecast we said it was possible we would break the record high temperature and indeed we did. In fact, we smashed it.

At 3:05pm the mercury at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City’s official records are kept topped out at 92 degrees.  This easily bested the previous record high for this date of 89 degrees set in 2015.

Here in Thornton we were just a touch cooler with our high hitting 91 degrees at 3:19pm.

Change is coming soon though with high temperatures this weekend being much cooler.  A trough and associated cold front will be moving through and that will translate to Saturday highs in the mid to upper 60s and only the upper 50s on Sunday.

Details in our extended forecast here.

Denver sets a new record high temperature for September 3

Record High TemperaturesWhew! Is this September or July?  As expected the mercury kept on climbing today and did indeed get into record-setting territory.

At 1:53pm the temperature at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City’s official records are kept reached 97 degrees.  This easily bests the previous record high for the date of 95 degrees set in 1995.

Additionally the reading tied the record for hottest September temperature.  Six other times in the past the mercury reached 97 degrees during September occurring on September 1, 1995, September 4, 1960, September 4, 1995, September 5, 1899, September 5, 2013, and September 6, 2013.

Here in Thornton, we were actually warmer than DIA (a rarity).  Temperatures here topped out at 98.5 degrees at 1:20pm.

While above normal temperatures (but not record-setting) are expected for tomorrow, we do expect to see a significant cool down Tuesday then see things bounce back to readings a bit above normal for the balance of the week. See the extended forecast here.

Record high temperature set for June 20

Record High TemperaturesWe knew it would be hot today and the proof is in the numbers as Denver set a new record high temperature for the date.

According to the National Weather Service, the mercury topped out at 99 degrees at Denver International Airport.  This breaks the previous record high for June 20 of 97 degrees set in 2007.

Here in Thornton, we almost matched the record with a high of 97.9 degrees at 3:57pm.

There will be no break from the heat until Friday.

Tomorrow’s forecast high of 98 degrees mirrors today’s high and will again come close to the record for June 21 (99 degrees in 2007). Thursday does cool some but with a forecast high of 91 degrees, the reading will still be well above normal for the date (85 degrees).

Denver sets record high temperature for March 23

Record High TemperaturesWith wintry weather just hours away, Denver’s recent warm spell let out one last gasp with a record high temperature.

At 3:03pm the high temperature at Denver International Airport, where the Mile High City’s official measurements are taken, reached 77 degrees.  This broke the record high for the date set in 2012 and previous years.

Here in Thornton we were just a touch cooler topping out at 76.1 degrees at 1:51pm.

While the month of March has continued the unseasonably warm weather that began in February, this is the first record high set this month.  The weather picture changes considerably, at least in the short term, with a blast of cold and snow set to arrive tonight.
